Active Schools Week
Published on June 27, 2024

This year’s Active Schools’ Week at Rathoe NS took place from Thursday 20th June to Wednesday 26th June. The children took part in many different activities throughout the week. Thursday 20th saw the pupils from 1st to 6th Class taking part in cricket coaching sessions. Bernard O Mara from Cricket Leinster visited the school to give the pupils tips about throwing technique, batting and catching as well as learning about the equipment used and the different positions on the cricket field. On Friday 21st, Keith Jordan Fitness went to each class in the school demonstrating the sport of jiu jitsu. The pupils got to try out some moves of their own on the mats and enjoyed seeing a new sport in action.

On Monday 24th, the annual class races took place with some powerful running on display from many pupils. Also, some of the classes did a walk of the locality, taking advantage of the beautiful weather. Tuesday 25th saw the annual 6th Class Vs Staff rounders match take place. With two very evenly matched teams taking part, the result was very close. Many observers reckon that the staff just about nicked it in the end.

The finals of the soccer and basketball leagues also took place this week. These are always very competitive in nature and there is great pride in winning medals in these events. Active Schools’ week came to a busy conclusion on Wednesday 26th with our annual Sports Day. The pupils had great fun at different stations such as Zumba, Tug of War, Spud ‘n Spoon, 3-Legged Race, Sack Race, Tea-Towel Volleyball, Obstacle Course, Welly Throw and Penalty Shootout. We finished off a great with a visit from Nicky and his ice cream van. Thank you to the Parents Association for supporting the cost of the ice creams. They were a real treat on such a warm day. A great week was had by all. I’m sure the pupils slept well each night after all of their exertions. We look forward to hearing about all the pupils sporting endeavours over the summer. Thank you, Mr. Browne, for your continued commitment in the area of sport in our school.
