Community Games are up and running. We had some medals clicking as children came to school over the last few weeks for placing in recital and in group singing along with winners in Chess and other events. Well done to all involved.

Green Schools: The committee and I were delighted to hear that we are going to be receiving our green flag for Global Citizenship – Marine Environment. The awards ceremony will take place in Hotel Kilkenny on 14th May. A big congratulations to all the pupils in Rathoe (submitted by Ms. O’Brien). Thank you to Ms. O’Brien for all her hard work behind the scenes.

Fighting Cocks training: The Fighting Cocks training club are back with us again this year coaching children from Junior Infants to 4th Class.

Carlow Sports Partnership: We currently have basketball training for 3rd to 6th Class taking place each Wednesday. The children are enjoying learning the skills of basketball.

Wellbeing funding: We were very fortunate to receive funding from Tullow Area School Completion in the area of Wellbeing. We have purchased some board games for rainy days, extra paddles for table tennis and motivational sayings for our stairs.

Credit Union funding: We applied and were successful at securing €500 worth of funding from the Credit Union for STEM. We look forward to building our resources up in this area.

Assembly: We were treated to a lovely Assembly yesterday from 3rd Class. April was a busy month for the class, it was lovely to see all their work and listen to their songs. Thank you to Ms. Lalor for preparing the children.

First Penance: We wish the second class well for their First Penance service which takes place tonight in the church at 7pm. Thank you to Ms. Redmond for preparing the children.

Class Book Project: Third Class were extremely busy over the past two months working on the Class Book Project. They planned, wrote, and illustrated their own Class Book. It is called ‘Stories from our Imagination’. It was wonderful for them to experience all that goes in to having a piece of their work come to life and be published. The students were excited about writing and so proud of the finished product. Now they have a keepsake they will always cherish. They are excited to be recognised authors of their own book. Well done to them all and the great effort that went into putting it together (submitted by Ms. Lalor).

Submissions from Mr. Browne

Credit Union Quiz: Sunday 7th April saw our Under 11 quiz team of Muireann Byrne, Daragh O Neill, Emily Wilson and Alena Thornton take part in the national finals of the Credit Union Schools’ Quiz held in the RDS in Dublin. It was a wonderful occasion for all involved and the team acquitted themselves superbly, finishing 6th out of 44 teams. To do so well at the national event and to come through the various competitions to get there, was a magnificent achievement. The team did themselves, their families and the school very proud. Well done.

Chess: On Tuesday 9th April, our school chess team took part in an interschool tournament involving teams from Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford, which was held in Oylegate, Co. Wexford. After six rounds of tense chess games, the Rathoe team of Padraic Hogan, Fionn Doyle, Jesse O Neill, Fionn Dee, Jonah Meenehan, Ethan Finnegan, Finnán Whelan and James Hogan emerged with silver medals, coming second overall. This is our first year entering a chess team and the lads involved were a credit to Rathoe NS. Well done to all involved. Our “Chess for Beginners” lessons are coming to an end but we look forward to recommencing the chess sessions again in the winter months.

Cumann na mBunscol: The Cumann na mBunscol hurling and camogie competitions are now in full swing for the months of April and May. Our first matches took place on Friday 19th April, away against Ballinabranna NS. Our girls team lost narrowly after a very good display while our boys were involved in a high-intensity game which finished in a draw. On Friday 26th April, our teams made the long journey to Borris to take on the home team. The players showed great skill and determination throughout but the Borris NS teams proved just too strong on the day. Our next fixture is at home to Newtown NS in the Fighting Cocks on Wednesday 1st May.

Thank you Mr. Browne for you involvement and support in extra curricular activities in the school.

Junior Entrepreneur Project: All of us in 6th Class would like to let you know about our Junior Entrepreneur Project. Over the past number of months we have been working on coming up with good entrepreneurial ideas. After a trip to the “Dragon’s Den”, the project that was chosen was the Rathoe NS School Days Calendar. This is a personalised calendar which will have the dates of the Rathoe NS school closures for the 24/25 school year. Also, each month on the calendar has a photo of a class from the school with a particular theme; for example for January there will be a picture of 4th Class with the theme “Happy New Year”. Thank you to all of the classes who dressed up and posed so well for the photos! The calendar will be from August ’24 to July ’25 to coincide with the school year. The calendar will cost €10 and will make a lovely present for relations as well as making sure that nobody forgets the important dates in the Rathoe NS school year. A pre-order of the calendar can be made by sending cash in an envelope with your child’s name on it, into the school office or on Aladdin with a link that will be released tomorrow. The link will be live for one week. If you would like to purchase more than one calendar you can do so by adding in the cost of the amount of calendars that you would like to purchase. After the 8th of May, we will only be able to take cash orders, with the final order number going to printers on the 10th of May. We really hope that you will like our product and we would be extremely grateful for your support with our project. Thank you, 6th Class.

Standardised Testing: In Literacy and Numeracy will commence for 1st to 6th class from the week beginning the 13th and 20th of May.

Helmets and Hurleys: if any families have any helmets, hurleys or sliotars at home that they would like to donate to the school, we would be grateful for them.

Drop off and collection: a reminder at drop off and collection to please use the carpark across the road. Please do not stop in front of the school to let children out of the car or park up on the footpath as it makes it very difficult for children to pass safely.

Parents Association: Thank you to our Parents’ Association for subsidising our school tour buses. This allows us to reduce the cost of our school tours considerably which benefits all families. Thank you to our families for supporting school events that are run by the Parents’ Association such as our weekly Split the Pot. Our First Holy Communion is coming up on the 11th May, and the Parents’ Association will be serving refreshments after Mass. This is a lovely tradition for all the children and families, that can only be maintained with parents’ support. If you are available to help out on the day (even if only for an hour or two), please contact the chairperson (María), or the school. Also, if you would like to make any donations, please bring them to the school by Friday 10th May.

The PA are co-organising a Walkathon on the 14th-15th June to raise funds for the school. The goal would be to set up parents’ groups from each class to take on an hour and raise funds and sponsorship for their group. Stay tuned for more details!
