Friendship Week: This week we celebrated our first ‘Friendship Week’ of the year. The whole school participated in activities such as Secret Friend, Buddy Reading, ‘Caught being kind’ and Yoga with Kate Bulman and her dog Solas. We also reminded the children what it meant to be a good friend and to always be kind to our peers and relations. The week was an enjoyable experience for all participants, and we are already looking forward to the next one (submitted by Ms. Kealy). Thank you to Ms. Kealy for coordinating the activities.

Community Games: Well done to all of our pupils that took part in the Community Games this year with some going to Leinster and National level.

Tullow Show winners: Well done to Katie Shannon and Grace McDonald for their handwriting entries into the Tullow show. The girls were presented with their prizes on Wednesday night last.

Carlow GAA football Coaching: 2nd – 6th Class have begun training with Carlow GAA football. This will continue up to Halloween.

Cumann na mBunscol: The Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic football competitions have commenced again for the boys and girls from the 4th, 5th and 6th classes. In our opening round of matches, played at Clonmore GAA, our boys defeated Hacketstown NS, while our girls were defeated by the same opposition. Round two saw us taking on Ballinkillen NS at the Fighting Cocks GAA club. The boys team lost narrowly in a very even contest and our girls team drew in an exciting game. With two rounds still to play, places in the finals are still up for grabs. Training continues on Mondays for the boys and Wednesdays for the girls from 3pm to 4pm. Rathoe NS Abú! (submitted by Mr. Browne). Thank you to Mr. Browne and Ms. Kealy for volunteering their time after school each week to train the two teams. The very best of luck to the two teams in their remaining matches.

Drama Lessons: Drama lessons with Keelin McDonald are taking place for all classes in the school, each Friday. The pupils really enjoyed the last two week’s sessions. It has brought the “Friday Feeling” back to the school.

Spanish Students: Four Spanish students are spending five weeks with host families in the area and are attending Rathoe NS for the duration of their stay. They have settled in well and are a great addition to 6th Class.

Parents’ Association: AGM will take place on Wednesday 4th October at 7:30pm at the school. Please do come and support. Please note that if you would like to become an officer on the committee, you must be present at the meeting. You can be nominated and this will need to be seconded by another member. Only those present at the meeting can nominate/vote for officers. All parents present can be committee members.

Split the Pot: has commenced. Thank you to everyone for their continued support.

Assembly: Mr. Browne’s 6th Class will be the first to host our assembly this year. We are looking forward to having the whole school together. There will be photos taken of our pupils of the month along with other assembly photos. Please visit our website to see how everyone got on,

Green schools: We are working on year 2 of Global Citizenship Marine Environment. The new GS committee has been selected and consists of the following pupils: Alena Thornton, Sophia O’Neill, Elsie McDonagh, Callum Chapman, Jessica Murphy, James O’Gorman, Adelina Florea and Margaret Doran. The following are subs. Carraig Byrne, Darcie O’Connor, Miley Doran and Jessi O’Neill. Next week is National Walk to School Week, so if the weather permits on Wednesday, 4th it would be great if the children living nearby could walk to school (submitted by Ms. O’Brien).

Personal insurance: Reminder, that insurance has to be paid at a cost of €9 per child. A link will be sent to you later today to make the payment if you haven’t already done so.

Healthy Lunch Policy: At the start of a new school year parents are reminded that we operate a Healthy Lunch Policy at Rathoe NS. Fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets, chocolate bars, biscuits and nuts are not allowed, and should not be provided. Spoons should be supplied with yogurts where possible please.

Children coming to school feeling ill: If your child is feeling sick before school, please do not send them to school. It would be advised not to tell your child they can ring home if they have to, as they will take you up on it. Also, if your child is too sick to go out on yard, they should not be in school. Exceptions can be made for children who are recovering from operations, and who have missed considerable school time. Your cooperation is requested in this matter.

Headlice: If you suspect your child may have picked up headlice please treat and inform the class teacher immediately, so that we can advise other parents. Your child’s class will receive a text alerting you that a breakout has occurred.

Policies: Each year the school reviews various policies throughout the year, before Board of Management meetings take place to ratify them. It is great to get some parental input when reviewing these policies. There are a number of policies that we hope to review in the coming months. If any parent would like to help to review any of these policies, please contact Aileen, in the office.

School drop off and pick up: I would like thank parents for their co-operation in supporting us with school drop off and pick up. Please ensure that you continue to use the parish carpark and bring the children to the pedestrian crossing. Please do not park at the island on the road to let your children out. We are encouraging the children to line up along the wall in the mornings if they are waiting for the gates to open.

Finally, we would like to wish the Fighting Cocks football club all the very best in the Junior A final at the weekend where they take on St. Mullins. Na Coilig Troidhe Abú!

Le meas,

Erika Murphy
