Newsletter 1

Wednesday 6th September, 2023

Welcome Back: As we near the end of our first full week of term, it is great to see the children back and excited to start the new school year. A warm welcome back to them all, to our parents and staff and especially to all our new Junior Infants. We hope they will enjoy their school years in Scoil Phádraig, Rathoe. We were delighted to be able to open our 3rd ASD classroom and welcome all six new students.

We would like to congratulate Ms. Eva Kealy on becoming a permanent member of staff and we would like to welcome Ms. Niamh Redmond as 1st / 2nd class teacher and Ms. Emer McDonald as our 3rd ASD class teacher. We also have two new SNAs working with us Ms. Carol O’Toole and Ms. Sinéad Frayne.

We say a fond farewell and best wishes to Ms. Sarah Furlong who is now teaching in Ballon NS.

Contact Phone Numbers: We would ask that anyone who has changed their phone number or email address over the summer months informs us immediately so that we can update our records promptly.

Our main line of communication to parents is via Aladdin. We issue newsletters by email, in a bid to reduce the amount of paper being used in the school. Newsletters will also be available to view on our website.

Morning drop off: Children are reminded to line up outside along the wall if they arrive to school before the gates open at 9am. We would ask parents to remind the children to line up on the left hand side of the gate that they are entering.

Please note that no responsibility is accepted for pupils waiting outside the school before 9am.

The children have been doing a fantastic job of walking to their class independently from the school gates. We would continue to encourage parents to wave their children off to school in the carpark or at the school gates. Should you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please contact Aileen in the school office at 059 9148786 or e-mail info@rathoens.com. If you are needing to visit the school office in the morning or during the day, please only go to the front door and report directly to the office.

Labels on clothes: We have already had a number of children that have lost jumpers. Can you please ensure that your child’s name is on their school jumper and their belongings such as lunch bag and coat, especially those that have children in the junior end of the school. We have a number of spare

jumpers in the front entrance that you are most welcome to. You may want them as spares. We will be taking the boxes away over the next few weeks.

Healthy Lunch Policy: At the start of a new school year parents are reminded that we operate a Healthy Lunch Policy at Rathoe NS. Fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets, chocolate bars and biscuits are not allowed, and should not be provided. Spoons should be supplied with yogurts. Please also note we have children with nut allergies in the school. Chocolate and nuts are not allowed.

Invitations to birthday parties: please note that invitations cannot be handed out in school and must be done so outside of school.

Drama Lessons: Drama lessons with Keelin McDonald will begin once more this coming Friday for all classes. The children love to see Keelin coming and enjoy the sessions.

Cumann na mBunscol: Training will begin next week after school for the Cumann na mBunscol GAA competitions. Boys will train on Monday and girls on Wednesday after school. This competition is open to 4th, 5th and 6th Class children.

SEN Team: This year the SEN team is made up of Ms Fawcett, Ms. Finnegan, Ms O Brien and Ms. Brennan. We are waiting to fill our final position. They will be doing team/parallel teaching sessions to assist teachers with Literacy and Numeracy programmes, while also taking groups of children for Language and other groups as the need arises. Should your child be included in small groups from time to time and you have not been informed please rest assured that we are simply giving as many children as possible an opportunity to participate in small social groups for a short period. All parents whose children attend for Literacy and Numeracy have received consent forms already.

School Calendar: Please find the school calendar on our website, www.rathoens.com, for your information. Please arrange family holidays to take account of the calendar where possible, to minimise the number of lost school days. The BOM are obliged to inform Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, when a child has missed 20 school days.

Parent/Teacher Meetings: will take place in November. Dates to be confirmed. In the meantime, if you have any concerns or queries in relation to your child, please call the office to arrange a call back from the Class Teacher.

School fees: A school fee of €40 per child is due. A link was sent to families on Tuesday for those who have yet to pay.

School Insurance form: It is strongly recommended that all families avail of this. Cost €9 per child for 24-hour cover. The form will be e-mailed to all families next week. Please complete and return in an envelope to class teacher, marked with child’s name and ‘School Insurance’. Alternatively, you can pay via epayments. A link will be sent to you next week. If you are paying in this way, there is no need to return the form.

Children coming to school feeling ill: If your child is feeling sick before school, please do not send them to school. It would be advised not to tell your child they can ring home if they have to, as they will take you up on it. Also, if your child is too sick to go out on yard, they should not be in school. Exceptions can be made for children who are recovering from operations, and who have missed considerable school time. Your cooperation is requested in this matter.

Headlice: If you suspect your child may have picked up headlice please treat and inform the class teacher immediately, so that we can advise other parents. Your child’s class will receive a text alerting you of any time that a breakout has occurred.

Child Release Book: This year, again, we require that adults collecting children early from school contact the school office before collecting their child. The adult collecting the child must be named in the form that you filled in on enrolment, and if there is a change it must be updated in writing. We must insist on this procedure solely in the interest of each child’s protection and safety.

Parents Association: We will hold our AGM on Wednesday, October 4th at 7.30pm. For those of you who are new to the school, please do make contact with any of our committee members. It is a great opportunity to get involved in your child’s school while meeting new friends. We will have more information regarding the meeting closer to the time.

It is important to note that any concerns or issues that you may have with the school should go directly to the school and not through the Parents Association or the Board of Management. We as a school appreciate the time that parents and Board nominees give in a voluntary capacity to support the running of our school and thank them sincerely.

Split the Pot: will resume next week with the first draw on Friday 15th September. For those new to Split the Pot, an envelope is given to your child at the beginning of each week. To enter the draw, put 2 euro into the envelope and bring it back into your child’s teacher during the week. One winning envelope will then be picked out on Friday each week. The winner will receive half of the total amount that was collected that week, with the other half going towards the Parents Association fund for the school. Your contributions in this initiative are greatly appreciated.

Policies: Each year the school reviews various policies throughout the year, before Board of Management meetings take place to ratify them. It is great to get some parental input when reviewing these policies. Once we know what policies are up for review I will make it known to you all. If any parent would like to help to review these policies, please contact Aileen, in the office.

School drop off and pick up: Finally, I would like thank parents for their co-operation in supporting us with school drop off and pick up. Please ensure that you continue to use the parish carpark and bring the children to the pedestrian crossing. We would encourage you not to let the children out at the island part of the road as the buses pull up in this area and it hinders the flow of traffic. The cones at the entrance of the island are in place as this area is reserved for school buses only and should not be moved.

Le meas,

Erika Murphy

Principal
