January Newsletter 2023
Published on January 28, 2023

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all parents, children and families a peaceful and prosperous New Year, even if we are a number of weeks into the new term! We are well into second term activities with many things happening in all areas of the curriculum.

Applications for Enrolment for September 2023 are now being accepted. Please call in to the school office or download a copy of the application form, on our website www.rathoens.wordpress.com.

GAA Football coaching is currently taking place for Junior Infants to 2nd Class with Carlow GAA.

Green Schools – Marine Environment.  Most of the rubbish found in the sea comes from land. Most litter is plastic; it breaks down into smaller pieces but doesn’t disappear.  Fish and other sea animals eat this plastic thinking it is food. This gets caught in their bodies and in some cases kills the fish or sea animals (submitted by Muireann Byrne, 4th Class).

Catholic Schools Week was from Sunday 22nd January to Sunday 29th January. The pupils took part in various daily activities to mark Catholic Schools’ Week. We were delighted to be able to attend Mass on Wednesday for Grandparents Day. Fr. O’Connell delivered a wonderful service that was enjoyed by all. We welcomed Grandparents back to the school for tea and refreshments. The children were so excited to share their artwork, poems and stories about their Grandparents. It was fantastic to see such a turnout. We hope all our visitors enjoyed the day as much as we did. We received many cakes, biscuits, buns and home bakes from parents which were very much appreciated. Thank you to the Parents Association for coordinating the refreshments in Sona.  Thank you to the Hall committee for the use of their chairs and delph.

School Council The school is in the process of setting up a student council. Over the past few weeks, children from 3rd-6th class have been writing letters and making posters to show why they should be picked for the student council. We saw many wonderful ideas coming in. I am very excited to get started with this group of students and see some of their ideas come to life. The student council gives the students of Rathoe NS a voice and in return, the children learn responsibility and leadership skills. Well done to

  • Harry Glynn, Isabelle Finnegan, Katie Hogan, Lauryn O’Byrne (6th Class)
  • Padraic Hogan, Kitty Dowling, Muireann Cole, Emma Bergin (5th Class)
  • Séan Keating, Sophie Cunningham, Ciara O’Brien (4th Class)
  • Amber Lyons, Maisie O’Connor, Lucy McDonald (3rd Class)

We will keep you up to date on what we have been doing each month in the school newsletter (submitted by Eva Kealy).

Wellness Week is currently taking place in the school with a lot of fun activities planned. Our emphasis is on how we should treat each other and to be kind to ourselves. Please do have a look at our website, www.rathoens.wordpress.com, for pictures from the week. We will share more of what we have done in next month’s newsletter.
